Interaction between developers and domain experts is one of the soft skills so essential to evolving Ubiquitous Language on a project. Such skills are best learned by osmosis, working alongside those who already possess them. Unfortunately, people with these skills aren't always readily available. Learning by watching is probably the next best thing to learning by direct participation. This is one of the reasons we created "DDD the Movie: Working with Domain Experts".
The movie follows a group of developers interacting with a domain expert over the length of their project, showing how these interactions help them reach a common understanding of the domain by refining their language and ultimately leads to a clear model and code free from tangled compensation logic. It also illustrates some pitfalls they encounter along the way.
The movie is based on a play that Eric Evans wrote for one of his classes. This is the second screening in NYC, and the third worldwide - the first one was during 2007 OOPSLA. We will discuss the subject of the movie after the screening.
