DDD-NYC October Meetup: Context Mapping, Act II

This location is shown only to members

This is the second meeting on Context Mapping (Chapter 14 of Eric Evans' book "Domain-Driven Design").

It is based on a segment of Eric's class on Strategic Design which he kindly let me use for this purpose.

The segment is the reenactment of a play called "The Mystery of Peerless Shipping" set in the IT department of Peerless Shipping, a large container shipping company. The newly hired software development manager, David, is worried about some of his projects, but can't put his finger on the problem. The reports from lower-level managers mostly paint a rosy picture, but the teams are always announcing delays, and more often than not they blame the other teams.

He likes to feel he sees the big picture of what is happening in his department, and he definitely doesn't have this vision here. Shawn, a Strategic Design Consultant, has been hired to give him a Context Map, one kind of strategic view. In a series of interviews with various Peerless development leaders, Shawn will piece this together, with your help.

Last time we went through Act I of the play, learned of what context mapping is and covered the following patterns: Partnership, Customer-Supplier, Conformist, Anti-corruption layer, Open Host Service. This time we will continue to Act II and finally resolve the mystery, while learning the rest of the patterns.

If you didn't attend out previous meeting, don't despair - we will briefly review it before venturing further.

It will be helpful, although not necessary, to review Chapter 14 of the book. Alternatively, you can check out the much shorter Pattern Summaries.

Agenda:
6:30 - 7:00: Refreshments
7:00 - 7:15: Introduction
7:15 - 8:30: Context Mapping Play
8:30 - 9:00: Networking

You will need to RSVP by the end of business day of September 30th: due to the building security requirements, we will need to provide them with a list of attendees. Please bring a photo ID.

This meeting is sponsored by Bill Zack @ Microsoft who kindly provided the space and refreshments (thanks!!)

    Good discussion, some good insight.

Vlad brought those who did not attend the prior meeting up to speed so they could participate more fully in last night's meeting. We continued with the play/training session on bounded contexts started at our last meeting with Eric Evans. Vlad fielded several questions from attendees and there was valuable discussion of DDD including mapping from model to code, the importance of contexts, etc.
